space.gif (43 bytes)

Three Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSME's) power the Space Shuttle orbiter.  The SSME has achieved 100% flight success and a demonstrated reliability of over 0.9999.  The SSME is a re-usable, staged combustion liquid oxygen / liquid hydrogen engine.  The 77.5 : 1 area ratio nozzle was selected to optimize SSME performance along it's flight path from lift-off to orbit.
