The Great Wall Industry Long March 4 is a three stage launch vehicle, the third stage being a cryogenic upper stage. The Long March 4 was developed to serve as a back up to the Long March 3 for launching China's communications satellites. After the successful launch of China's first communications satellites by LM-3, the main mission of the LM-4 was shifted to the launch of sun-synchronous orbit meteorological satellites.
