Yuzhnoye Begins Mayak Launch Vehicle Development

More Information:

NPO Yuzhnoye is beginning development of a new family of launch vehicles, Mayak, for the national space agency of Ukraine (NKAU).

The Mayak 12 vehicle, the only model currently funded, would be based on a first stage using two NPO Energomash RD-120 engines, with the second stage using a single RD-120 and an upper stage using a modified NPO Yuzhnoye RD-8 engine. The Mayak 12 is expected to be able to launch 1,700 kg (3750 lbm) to a 500 km (270 nmi) Sun-synchronous orbit. First flight is planned for 2005 - 2006. Two launch sites, Brazil's Alcāntara Launch Center and South Africa's Overberg Test Range, are under consideration.

A larger vehicle, the Mayak 23, would be able to launch 3,000 kg (6600 lbm) to geostationary orbit.
