Eutelsat is
reportedly planning to fly two of its upcoming Hot Bird direct
broadcasting satellites by mid-2002 using new launch vehicles
making their first flights.
Eutelsat is in
final negotiation with International Launch Services (ILS) to
launch Hot Bird 6 on the first Atlas V flight scheduled for May
2002. The vehicle, designated AV-001,
will fly its baseline 401 configuration, with a 4-m payload
fairing and no strap-on boosters, as a demonstration for future
U.S. Air Force Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) missions.
Eutelsat
is planing to use a launch contract previously signed with
Arianespace, to fly Hot Bird 7 on a shared launch atop the first
Ariane 5ECA
vehicle. The flight will introduce an upgraded lower composite,
with improved solid booster stages and the new Snecma Vulcain 2
engine, and the new ESC-A cryogenic upper stage. This launch is
scheduled in June 2002.
