Soyuz
Increasing Production
Progress State
Scientific Production Space Center is increasing production of Soyuz
rockets. Progress plans to manufacture 13-15 rockets in 2001. In
recent years, the plant averaged 5-6 rockets annually for launches
to the Russian Mir space station. The Progress plant will need to
build 8 rockets annually to service the International Space Station
(ISS).
Progress
currently produces Soyuz U rockets that can launch around 5 metric
tons (11,020 lbm) of cargo into low-Earth-orbit (LEO). Modifications
are currently being made to the Soyuz 2, which will be able to carry
around seven tons (15,428 lbm).
In two-three years Progress plans to begin production of the
new Aurora rocket with performance to LEO of 11 metric tons (24,244
lbm), using NK-33 engines. The Aurora is a joint project between
Energiya and Progress.
