Boeing to Move Corporate Headquarters

Boeing announced plans to move company headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth or Denver. Boeing reported the move is prompted by the need ”to be in a location central to our operating units, customers and the financial community, but separate from our existing operations.” Boeing hopes to select the new corporate site by early summer and have operations functioning there by fall.

Boeing has customer ties in each of the communities it is considering for their headquarters relocation. Chicago, besides being a central air hub, is the home to the headquarters of United Airlines. United Airlines was part of a conglomerate in the 1930s which included Boeing, and the airline has been a kickoff customer of most of the legacy Boeing’s airliner models. Dallas-Fort Worth is also a major airline hub, as well as being home to American Airlines, the world’s largest airline, and Southwest Airlines, Boeing’s largest airline customer. Dallas-Fort Worth is a short commuter flight from Houston, where the NASA space station management is located. Denver is a smaller airline hub, but has just opened a new modern airport. Denver is just north of Colorado Springs, which is home to the U.S. Air Force Space Command, which is a major Boeing customer. Denver is also centrally located to Boeing’s major production operations in Seattle, St. Louis and Southern California. Boeing has 198,900 employees.
