Earthwatch has
selected Boeing’s Delta 2 to launch QuickBird 2. The QuickBird
2 satellite is scheduled for launch into a sun-synchronous orbit in
October from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The 953 kg (2100 lbm)
satellite will be launched into a 450 km (243 nmi) to provide
improved resolution. (Originally the satellite was planned to orbit
at 600 km (324 nmi).
The
replacement satellite is being built by Ball Aerospace. EarthWatch
has previously launched EarlyBird and QuickBird 1 both of which were
lost. EarlyBird, launched on a Start-1, malfunctioned shortly after
launch in late 1997. QuickBird 1, launched by a Kosmos, was
destroyed in a launch failure in November 2000.
