Orbital
to Build Satellite for PanAmSat
Orbital Sciences is
beginning construction of a new spacecraft for PanAmSat,
to operate at 74°W. The 24 C-band satellite is scheduled for launch
in late
2002 or early 2003. The contract, including exercise of the options,
is valued at US$160 million. Launch services for the new Galaxy
satellite will be procured separately by PanAmSat.
PanAmSat has signed
an option for two additional satellites to succeed the Galaxy 5 and
Galaxy 1R satellites following their scheduled retirements in 2005
and 2006, respectively. The two satellites would each carry 24
C-Band transponders.
