Forms New Company to Market Alcāntara Launch Services
The
Agencia Espacial Brasileira (AEB), Brazilian space agency, is
incorporating Empresa Brasileira de Lancamentos Especiais (Brazilian
Space Launches Co.) to market launch support services from the
Centro de Lancamento de Alcāntara (CLA), Alcāntara Launch Center.
This previously had been the responsibility of Infraero, the
national airport infrastructure company. The new state-owned company
would report to the Brazilian Ministry of Science & Technology.
Alcāntara
is located 2.3°S of the equator, ideal for the launch of commercial
geosynchronous satellite. Brazil plans to invest US$13.2 million
(R$27 million) in 2001 for the construction of a port able to handle
heavy cargo, repair work on highways and upgrade of launch equipment.
