ImageSat to Skip Block A-series and Proceed to Block B-series Satellites

More Information:

ImageSat International (ISI) has decided to shift the production of their A2 satellite to a block B series model. EROS A2 had been scheduled for launch in the third quarter of 2001 on a Start-1 launch vehicle. Although production and subcontracting work has already started on EROS A2, the decision is not expected to disrupt production plans because of the high degree of commonality between the two blocks. The upgraded satellite will take about two years to ready for launch.

The EROS B series of satellites are initially expected to cost more than the US$100 million it cost to produce, insure and launch the EROS A1 satellite. However, after the first few satellites are built, the price is expected to drop to about US$70 million or so per satellite. EROS B1 has been scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2002.

The EROS A series satellite (A1) has a resolution of 1.8 meters (6 feet), with a design life of about 6 years. The EROS B series models will have a resolution of 0.82 meters (2.7 feet) with a design life of 10 years.

ISI plans a constellation of eight high-resolution imaging satellites. The company has contracted with Puscovie Uslugi, Moscow, for the first three launches, on Start 1 rockets.
