Taiwan,
under pressure from the U.S., may have to cancel its ROCSAT 2
satellite launch contract with India. The China Times reported,
”The US has objected to satellites made with US-made parts and
components being launched by India.” Li Lo-chuan, head of
Taiwan’s National Space Program Office (NSPO), has said, “There
are some problems in carrying out the launch contract, but no final
decision has been made on the fate of the contract.” The NSPO is
under pressure from the U.S. to terminate the contract. The United
States is insisting that Taiwan respect a United Nations ban imposed
on India. Under the UN embargo, India has been banned from imports
of high-tech products and parts for violating the international
nuclear weapons proliferation treaty.
Antrix was awarded the GSLV launch
contract late last year. The launch price has not been disclosed.
The satellite is currently scheduled for a 2002 launch. The launch
schedule already late due to problems in manufacturing the
satellite, would be further delayed.
