Hispasat Approves Amazonas 1 Satellite

Hispasat has approved the Amazonas project, which entails placing a communications satellite in orbit at 61º W over Brazil. This new satellite will provide coverage across North and South America, in addition to its trans-Atlantic capacity.

The tender for construction of the satellite will be issued in April, with award for construction to be made before July 2001. The new satellite is expected to have a mass of 4.5 metric tones, with a 15-year service life. It will carry 63 transponders, 36 of which will operate on Ku-band frequencies and 27 on C-band frequencies. The launch is scheduled for the second half of 2003. The investment to build and launch the new satellite is 237 million euros (39.433 billion pesetas).

The Amazonas project will be operated by Hispasat’s Brazilian subsidiary Hispamar, and will be partly owned by the Brazilian telecommunications company Telemar.
