The European Space
Agency (ESA) has selected Ariane 5 to launch its communications
testbed satellite, Artemis. Artemis is now scheduled for launch
as a co-passenger with Insat 3C in late summer. Artemis was
originally scheduled for launch on a Japanese H-2A rocket under a
cooperative agreement with the Japanese space agency, NASDA.
Artemis
will be used to test and develop operations in new areas of
telecommunication and navigation, and initiate a European data-relay
satellite to satellite communication system. The completed satellite
is in storage awaiting shipment to the launch site.
