Brazil
Reviewing Launch Program / Increases Budget
The Brazilian
government is increasing its budget for launch vehicle development
in 2001 by 200%, to US$6.2 million (R$12 million). The budget, which
will total US$13.4 million (R$26 million) over two years may not be
enough, as Instituto de Aeronautica e Espaço (IAE) estimates US$19
million (R$37 million) are needed to complete the VLS 1 development
program. The VLS program will be reviewed in February 2001.
Brazil
is considering defining a new generation of launch vehicles in
partnership with other countries. Talks have been reported with
Russia, France, Italy, Germany and Ukraine. The third flight of the
VLS 1 is now scheduled for the end of the year with a test payload.
