Astro Inc. intends to remain in the competition to build the
spacecraft the next generation of U.S. Global Positioning System
(GPS) navigation satellites, despite having failed to win one of the
two U.S. Air Force contracts recently awarded to design the
spacecraft. Spectrum Astro believes it can offer a significant
contribution to the program. Spectrum Astro will present its GPS 3
plan to the Air Force at the same time as the Lockheed and Boeing
unveil their designs.
In
November the Air Force awarded one-year, US$16 million contracts to
Lockheed Martin Corp., and Boeing Co. for the GPS design work. The
Air Force intends to select a single company to build the
next-generation system in 2003.
