Iridium
85 reentered the Earth’s atmosphere on December 30 at 20:45 UTC. It
reentered over the south Pacific Ocean at 60.3°S and 167.8°W. The
satellite was not designed to survive reentry intact and was
expected to mostly burn up in the atmosphere. Iridium 85 was
launched in November 1998 on a Delta 2 rocket from Vandenberg Air
Force Base, California. Iridium 85 had failed 9 days after it was
launched.
