Initiates Next Generation Polar Weather Satellite Development

The Shanghai
Aerospace Administration has started development that will lead to
the construction and launch of the Feng Yun 3 sun-synchronous
weather satellite. The new satellite is slated for tentative launch
in 2005. It is expected to weigh 2,200 kg (4850 lbm) and is planned
to have a life span of two years.
Feng
Yun 1D is scheduled for launch by a CZ-4B in 2001. The geostationary
Feng Yun 2C is planned for launch in 2003 on a CZ-3A. Feng Yun
translates from Chinese to English as “wind and cloud.”
