The
Délégation Générale pour l'Armement (France's Ministry of
Defense's procurement
agency) has awarded the development of the
Syracuse 3A military satellite telecommunications system to Alcatel Space
Industries. The US$ 1.2 billion (Euro 1.39 billion euros) contract
involves building and placing in orbit in December 2003 a new
generation satellite, and enhancing the ground equipment needed for
its use. The satellite will be launched on an Ariane 4. The contract also involves maintaining the system's
operational conditions for two decades and includes options for two
other satellites of this type to be ordered in the future. Syracuse
3A will replace Syracuse 2.
