Hispasat
S.A. was awarded access to Brazil's 61 W by the Brazilian regulatory
authorities on September 27. Hispasat paid US14.6 million (Real 27
million) for a Ku-band license using that slot. On October 10,
Hispasat signed an agreement with Telemar, a Brazilian
telecommunications operator, to add C-band capacity to the
satellite. (Telemar had received its C-band license in an earlier
licensing round.) Hispasat will issue a request for bids by early
2001 for a satellite, to be called Amazonas 1, to serve that slot,
by 2003.
Hispasat
is also planning to launch, in 2003, Hispasat 1E, a hybrid Ku-band,
Ka-band satellite.
