Motorola
Inc. has received court approval to decommission the Iridium
constellation. Iridium gateways in Germany, Italy and the United
States have stopped providing service. The gateway closures are part
of Motorola’s final preparations to deorbit the constellation.
Motorola has made no public announcement regarding when it plans to
begin deorbiting satellites.
CMC International,
Porterville, CA, has revised its bid for Iridium's satellite
constellation and other assets. The company is still offering US$30
million, but adjusted the percentage that would go to Iridium's
creditors if the agreement was approved.
The bankruptcy
court judge has ruled that Iridium LLC could transfer the lease of
its Reston, Va., facilities and sell related hardware and software
to Comsoft Systems Inc., McLean, VA, for US$4 million in cash. The
77,000-square-foot data center includes 4,500 square feet of
hardened and secured computer-grade space, as well as fire
suppression and power back-up systems. The data center is equipped
to accommodate a variety of communications needs, including dual T1
access for Internet access via diversified points of presence.
Comsoft Systems was the winning bidder in an auction for the lease
and property held on Aug. 28 as part of Iridium's chapter 11
bankruptcy proceedings.
