Sirius Satellite
Radio’s spare satellite, Sirius Radio 4, was “significantly damaged”
while being manufactured by Space
Systems/Loral. Further details on the damage will be released in
around 30 days, when an investigation is completed. Loral will be
responsible for any costs associated with repairs to the satellite.
Sirius
Satellite Radio needs three satellites to complete its radio system.
The company’s first satellite was launched in late June, with
another scheduled for launch in September, followed by the third in
October. Service is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2000.
The spare satellite was to be ready by December in case of a launch
failure, though the damage to the spare will push back the December
date.
