Production of
Russian RD-180 rocket engines will not begin in the United States
before 2005. The production line, to be managed by RD AmRoss LLC, a
joint-venture of NPO EnergoMash and Pratt & Whitney Space
Propulsion, will be set up only after technology safeguard
agreements between the U.S. and Russia, to protect Russian
technologies and prevent proliferation, are finalized. NPO
Energomash will receive a licensing fee for each engine produced in
the U.S.
NPO
Engeromash is under contract with Pratt & Whitney to deliver 18
rocket engines to the United States. Four, including one launched in
May, have already been delivered and an additional two engines are
ready for shipment. The contract includes options for up to 101
engines, including improved versions designed to power the Atlas 5
core stage.
