Loral
To Supply Brazilian Satellite, Estrela do Sul
Loral
Skynet do Brasil, a
subsidiary of Loral Space & Communications,
announced Space Systems/Loral will build a high-powered FS-1300
satellite to serve the Latin American market. The fixed satellite
services (FSS) spacecraft will carry 36 Ku-band transponders, with
two Ku-spot beams. Estrela do Sul is expected to be launched in mid-2002
and will be located at 63 W. Estrela
do Sul translates to English as Star of the South.
In order to
begin service Loral Skynet do Brasil has acquired the Anik C1
satellite from Telesat Canada. The satellite has been renamed to
Brasil 1(T), and is being moved from 106.8 W and is expected to
arrive at the 63 W slot later this month, where it will provide
limited service until the launch of Estrela do Sul. Brasil 1(T) is
an HS376 launched in 1985 with 8 Ku-band transponders available for
service. In its new location, the satellite will provide coverage of
the middle region of Brazil including Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro and
Brasilia.
