Boeing
will establish specific, formal measures to separate its satellite
and launch vehicle divisions (Delta and Sea Launch) once the
acquisition of Hughes' satellite manufacturing division is complete.
Boeing has agreed to specific terms that would establish firewalls
between the launch vehicle and satellite divisions to prevent
sensitive customer information from being exchanged between the
different parts of the company. The firewalls will include physical
and geographic separation of the satellite and launch vehicle
businesses. In addition, formal restrictions on interaction and
communication between employees of the divisions will be put in
place. Boeing already has firewalls in place between the Delta and
Sea Launch rocket divisions.
The
Boeing purchase of Hughes satellite manufacturing division follows
industry trends set by some of its competitors. Both Lockheed Martin
and the newly formed European Aeronautic, Defence and Space Co.
(EADS) have divisions which manufacture satellites and provide
launch vehicles. Lockheed Martin, through International Launch
Services (ILS), markets Atlas and Proton rockets, while EADS has a
25% interest in Ariane.
