SES
Buys Twenty Per Cent Stake In Embratel
Societe
Europeene des Satellites (SES), Luxembourg bought a 20 percent stake
in the satellite unit of Brazilian telecommunications firm Embratel.
The deal was valued at US$135 million, and is subject to Brazilian
government approval. Final approval is expected by October, at which
time Embratel’s satellite subsidiary will spin-off as a separate
company. SES has an option to purchase an additional 10 per cent of
this new company.
Embratel operates
four satellites located at 65°W, 70°W, 84°W and 92°W. The four
satellites carry a total of 102 C-band transponders,
which are at a 90% capacity utilization. A fifth satellite,
Brasilsat B-4, is scheduled for launch this month on an Ariane to
replace the satellite located at 65°W.
SES
is continuing to study further opportunities to enter the North
American market.
