Launch Services (ILS) has been offering customers, for the past
six months, a package deal that includes integration on both the
Atlas and Proton launch vehicles. ILS actually integrates the
customer’s satellite on both vehicles. A customer then has
options, at specific points in the schedule, to choose which
vehicle they will use. The service provides customers the
flexibility to deal with a variety of issues including range
problems or schedule conflicts caused by satellite delays. The
price offered for Assured Service contracts is inclusive of this
mutual backup. The contracts, however, are "a little more
complicated" than selecting the service and paying a flat fee
for either vehicle. The Assured
Service package does not, however, eliminate price
differences between the two rockets.
ILS has also been
offering customers, for the past six months, an Express Launch
service making it possible to prepare a launch with about four
months notice. This can be used when it suddenly becomes necessary
to change launch vehicles or do a replacement launch in a hurry.
The service involves working in advance with the spacecraft
manufacturers to work out integration details.
