AsiaSat Wins Hong Kong DBS License

The Chief Executive Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government awarded a BSS license to Asia Satellite Telecommunications Co. (AsiaSat) to launch and operate a satellite carrying four broadcasting satellite channels assigned to the territory. The BSS channels are designated for broadcasting purposes and are receivable in Hong Kong using small antenna dishes. AsiaSat will offer Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television services to provide as many as 40 digital television channels, on the AsiaSat 4 satellite. AsiaSat 4 will also carry a Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) payload. The satellite is scheduled for launch in early 2002. The launch vehicle, nor satellite manufacturer, for AsiaSat 4 have not yet been announced.

AsiaSat is a wholly owned subsidiary of Asia Satellite Telecommunications Holdings Limited. AsiaSat’s two major shareholders are China International Trust and Investment Corporation (CITIC) and Société Européenne des Satellites (SES).

Two unsuccessful applicants for licenses were APT Satellite Holdings and Teltec Electronic Systems.
