The U.S.
government is hinting that price and quantity quota restrictions
on Russian launches may not be extended after the current
U.S./Russian space launch trade agreement expires at the end of
the year, and could possibly be lifted as early as September or
October. Meetings being held between the Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative and senior Russian Trade Officials will take up the
issue. However, Moscow must first take additional steps to halt
the sale of Russian weapons technology to Iran. On June 5, the
U.S. lifted quotas imposed on Ukrainian launch vehicles.
The
move to drop quota restrictions has no effect on export laws. U.S.
companies planning to use Ukrainian or Russian launch vehicles
must still obtain export licenses from the U.S. State Department.
Quotas on Chinese launch vehicles remain in effect, that agreement
does not expire until the end of 2001.
