Arianespace
has decided not to proceed with a US$28.8 million investment at
their Kourou launch site to provide a near equatorial launch capability for
Russia’s Soyuz rocket. Arianespace will instead direct their
investment toward improvements in the Ariane 5. The decision for
not proceeding was based reduced demand for satellites in the
low-Earth-orbit market, as well as concern that the Soyuz might
compete with Ariane rockets for market share.
