Arianespace Reports 1999 Results

In 1999, Arianespace posted sales of US$ 912.9 million (EUR 975.9 million), compared with US$ 1,106 million (EUR 1,086 million) in 1998. Net income was US$ 6.8 million (EUR 7.3 million), compared with US$ 13.1 million (EUR 14 million) in 1998. Although operating income nearly tripled to US$ 31.4 million (EUR 33.6 million), net income was down because of a change in taxes. Arianespace paid income taxes of US$ 5.6 million (EUR 6 million) in 1999, while it had a tax credit of US$ 11.4 million (EUR 12.2 million) in 1998. Arianespace increased its reserves to US$ 293 million (EUR 313 million).

Arianespace is continuing the capital investments and other efforts needed to boost Ariane 5 production and launch rates to eight per year beginning in 2003. Improvements to Ariane 5, especially new versions of the upper stage with cryogenic and re-ignitable engines, will give it a payload capacity to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) of 10,000 kg (22,040 lbm) in 2002, increasing to 12,000 kg (26,450 lbm) in 2005.

Revenues in 1999  were generated by nine Ariane 4 launches and one Ariane 5 launch. In 1999, 15 GTO satellite launch contracts were offered for tender, compared with 21 in 1998, with Arianespace winning 12 out of the 15 contracts.
