Places VEB Order With Astrium
Arianespace
has placed an order with Astrium for 20 Ariane 5 vehicle equipment
bays (VEB). Valued at more than US$ 140 million (EUR 150 million),
this batch order covers three years of production, with the first
VEB scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2001.
This is Ariane’s second block buy of Ariane 5 vehicle equipment
bays. The order is for 3 VEBs to extend the
current series, 7 new VEBs adapted to Ariane 5's multiple orbits
mission profile, and 10 VEBs for the new ESC-A cryogenic upper
stage.
The Ariane 5 vehicle equipment bay
handles all flight control and command tasks for the rocket. The
vehicle equipment bay is a cylindrical structure measuring 5.4
meters in diameter, and 1.12 to 1.56 meters high, depending on the
version used. Dry mass ranges from 1,000 to 1,400 kilograms..
