Astrium
Opens Doors As Major European Supplier Of Space Products
On
May 17, Astrium officially opened its doors. Astrium NV merges the
space business components of DaimlerChrysler Aerospace (DASA) and
Matra Marconi Space. Astrium becomes the supplier of Eurostar
telecommunication satellite busses, remote sensing satellites,
Ariane's vehicle equipment bays and multiple launch adapters, the
Ariane 4 second stage and liquid boosters, and the Ariane 5 upper
stage and dual launch adapters. Astrium will also provide space
propulsion systems ranging from attitude control thrusters to
large engine components. Astrium is a partner in, as well as a
supplier to, Globalstar. Astrium expects to play a leading role in
the design and development of the European Galileo navigation
satellite system as well as participate in its operations and
maintenance activities.
Astrium becomes the main European industrial partner for
the International Space Station. Astrium will own 51% of Eurockot
Launch Services GmbH, 15% of Arianespace, and will become a
strategic partner of Israel Aircraft Industries and Coleman
Resarch Corp in LeoLink (building an American content version of
the Shavit). Shortly, Astrium will become part of the European
Aeronautics, Defense and Space Company (EADS). At that time
Astrium will be 75% owned by EADS and 25% owned by BAe Systems,
and EADS share in Ariane will become 27%.

Astrium's new chairman & CEO is Mr. Armand Carlier. The
company will be headquarted in the Netherlands. The company's new
