SkyBridge and Alcatel have delayed start of
service to 2003, which was originally planned to be operational by
the end of 2001. The first satellite is now scheduled to be
launched in the fourth quarter of 2002. Beginning in the third
quarter of 2003, residential subscribers should be able to sign up
through their preferred ISPs at about $30 a month. When the
SkyBridge constellation is completed in 2005 it will be able to
deliver 1 Mbps, with bursts to 20 Mbps. The 80-satellite
constellation is now anticipated to cost US$6.2 billion.
