When
representatives of Boeing recently met with BAE Systems in the
United Kingdom and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan, rumors
circulated that Boeing was shopping around for a merger partner.
Though mergers would be highly unlikely, alliances and cooperative
agreements are becoming more important in the global economy.
Boeing and Mitsubishi, who have cooperative agreements in place
likely extended existing agreements, while exploring new
opportunities, which could take the form of new alliances or even
joint ventures in commercial, space and military aerospace
projects. Mitsubishi and Boeing cooperate in the development of
rockets for launching satellites, jet passenger planes and jointly
offer aircraft maintenance services. A new Mitsubishi-Boeing
accord, could see Mitsubishi participating in joint development
and production of launch vehicles as well as providing funding.
