ISC Kosmotras has unveiled plans to
develop a new version of the Dnepr launcher. A new upper stage
will replace the standard third stage of the RS-20 (SS-18 Satan)
Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) to create a booster
designated Dnepr 3. It would deliver a 500 kg (1,102 lbm) payload
into geostationary orbit. Kosmotras is anticipating the first
Dnepr 3 launch into geostationary orbit would be in 2003. Two
unnamed Russian organizations are competing for the Kosmotras'
contract to develop the upper stage. Another yet-to-be-developed
propulsion unit is being planned to serve as the fourth stage of
the Dnepr 3 booster.
