NASDA Budget Reduced
|
The
draft
budget for the National Space Development
Agency of Japan (NASDA)
for the fiscal year beginning in April has been reduced by 10
billion yen (US$95 million) from last years 170 billion yen (US$
1.6 billion). Bureaucrats are using
two recent rocket failures as an excuse to reduce budgets. Responsibility
for Japan's space program are divided among five ministries,
supporting two separate programs, one led by NASDA and the other
by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Sciences (ISAS).
Each organization has their own rocket development program and
launch center. Rocket System Corporation has been hit hard by the
budget cuts, the decision to abandon the H-2 rocket and delay the
first flight of the next generation H-2A by a least a year, with
about 25 of the 80 member staff losing their jobs.
US$1 = 105.9 yen
