Sponsorship Likely For ESAs Beagle 2
|
Multinational
corporations are expressing interest in placing their logos aboard
a European Space Agency (ESA) probe, Beagle 2, due to land on Mars
in 2003. The Beagle 2 is scheduled to be launched as part of
ESA’s Mars Express orbiter. The 30 kg (66 lbm) rover will use a
drill and remote-controlled "mole" to dig out soil
samples. The samples will then be analyzed aboard the lander to
determine their mineral makeup, age and water content. Obtaining
the advertising sponsorships would mark the first commercial
backing for an interplanetary mission, and if it succeeds, the
sponsorship door may be opened for other space projects. The
British firm MetC Saatchi Sponsorship is responsible for seeking
the sponsors, looking for one title sponsor and up to five partner
sponsors. At least "three very interested parties" have
been found, willing to sponsor Beagle 2. The title sponsor will
get their name associated with the project –
"'the XYZ Beagle 2 Mission to Mars,' in the same way
one might say 'the Coca-Cola Cup' in tennis."
