Civil Aviation Industry Organizing To Protect Spectrum Access

At an industry meeting of airlines, airports, pilots, controllers, regulators, and tourism organizations in London on March 9-10, the civil aviation industry formed a coalition to protect vital radio frequencies today and in the future. Civil aviation future operations could be in jeopardy if the radio frequencies currently allocated to it are reallocated at the World Radio Conference (WRC) 2000 meeting in Istanbul starting on May 8, 2000. Aviation needs the assurance of accessibility to interference-free radio frequency bands to continue current operations and implement supporting new technologies, such as satellite-based communications, which have the potential to increase safety, reduce air traffic control delays and aviation’s impact on the environment. If governments at the WRC in May were to reallocate the frequencies used by aviation to the growing mobile telecommunications services, there could be an immediate, as well as future, impact on aviation communications, navigation, and surveillance services. Historically, aviation has always had use of these radio frequencies.
