First
GSLV Launch Campaign To Begin Soon
|
The
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is in final preparations
for the first launch of their Geosynchronous Satellite Launch
Vehicle (GSLV). ISRO hopes to start the launch campaign in the
later part of April or early May for a possible launch in July or
August. The first test flight of GSLV will place a GSAT satellite
into orbit this year. GSAT, sometimes referenced to as GramSat, is intended for experiments and
demonstration of advanced communications technologies like digital
audio, video and data broadcasting, internet services and
wide-band multimedia. GSAT has been designed with two S-band, a
high power C-band and two indigenous C-band transponders.
The GSLV
rocket is aimed at eventually launching Insat-type satellites from
India, to make India less dependent on foreign rockets
for Insat launches. ISRO does plan to launch two more Insat-3
spacecraft this year on Ariane rockets. The sub-systems of
Insat-3A and Insat-3C are in an advanced stage of fabrication and
test, while India’s Department of Space has finalized the
configuration of Insat-3D.
