Russia
And China May Be Discussing Mir Deal

Koptev, the director of the Russian Aviation and Space Agency (Rosaviacosmos),
recently accompanied Russian deputy prime minister, Ilya Klebanov,
on a trip to Beijing. After the meetings with their Chinese
counterparts a number of conflicting reports have been published
in Spain, India and Russia that suggest Russia might sell its
space station Mir to China. No details of any agreement, which has
been described as tentative, have been published, but it is said,
‘Russia will help the PRC (People's Republic of China) build an
orbital station,’ which could involve selling Mir to China.
Russia may have offered to rent out Mir, but the Chinese
apparently have insisted on putting their own flag on the space
station. It would cost China US$500 million to run Mir for three
or four years. Other reports suggest China has "tested the
water" on the possible purchase of Russian docking equipment,
and has asked Russia to consider allowing a Chinese spacecraft
equipped with a docking mechanism to be sent to Mir. Official
sources in both Russia and China have denied the reports.
