India Proceeding With Next Generation Of Remote Sensing Satellites

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has announced plans to build three new remote sensing satellites (IRS-2) in quick succession by year 2002. The next generation IRS-2 satellites are in a conceptual stage and their characteristics are still to be defined. The space budget for year 2000-01 has provisions for three second generation satellites - IRS-2A, 2B and 2C. Some defense analysts believe the IRS-2 series may have a military role. Work on India’s first generation (IRS-1) series of satellites, Cartosat (IRS P5) and Resourcesat (IRS P6) has been going on as scheduled and are planned for launch during 2001- 02. Cartosat, which will have a spatial resolution of 2.5 metres, would be used for urban planning while Resourcesat is basically to maintain continuity of service of the present IRS-1D satellite.
