AirTV Contracts For Four Satellites From Alcatel

Alcatel Space has signed a US$1.2 billion contract contract with AirTV Holdings Ltd to build a global satellite dedicated to delivering live television and Internet links to passengers aboard long-haul commercial jets. AirTV plans to deploy a worldwide direct broadcast satellite service to deliver live, multi-channel television and audio programming to aircraft. AirTV, based in Britain’s Channel Islands and in New York, has secured three orbital slots from the government of Canada and one from the Sultanate of Brunei. Alcatel Space, has completed the system design and will be responsible for the turnkey delivery of the overall space segment, including:  four high-power S-band geostationary satellites delivered in orbit, the comprehensive ground control segment for the satellites, including satellite control centers, and telemetry, tracking & command (TT&C) stations, and several uplink stations to transmit programming to aircraft. An announcement concerning the selection of a launch services provider will be made at a later date. The four AirTV satellites will be based on the Spacebus platform, and will be assembled and integrated in Alcatel Space's clean rooms, located in Cannes (France) and Toulouse (France). The 3,800 kg satellites will provide 8 kW of power over an operational life of 12 years. The satellites will provide global coverage (over the oceans as well as over the Earth's landmass) of up to forty live television channels and up to 300 audio channels providing multi-language programming. AirTV aircraft antennas are to be manufactured by BAE Systems Canada. AirTV expects its worldwide service to commence in the year 2003. The companies also signed a Memorandum of Agreement, which calls for Alcatel Space's operating arm, Spacecom, to become one of the strategic partners of AirTV in the first round of financing to be announced later this year.
