BEAL
ABANDONS PLANS FOR ROCKET FACTORY IN VIRGIN ISLANDS
|
Beal Aerospace has abandoned plans to build a new
manufacturing plant in the Virgin Islands. Beal Aerospace
Technologies Inc. had planned on building its BA-2 launch vehicle
on St. Croix, but now the company has decided to build that
factory at a coastal location in the continental United States.
Beal would not say why it changed its mind, although it
encountered considerable local resistance in St. Croix, including
environmental concerns. Beal plans to build a temporary launch
facility at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, but is still
considering whether to build a permanent launch complex there.
Beal has been considering launch sites in Guyana, on the northeast
coast of South America, and Cape Canaveral, Florida.
