The U.S. Air Force, in its continuing review of Lockheed Martin’s role in the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program, has told the company to hold off on production of a heavy-lift version of its new Atlas 5 rocket and not to complete a heavy-lift launch pad at Vandenberg, both moves being aimed at helping Lockheed Martin save money. The main issue is whether Lockheed Martin, which is attempting to streamline amid a recent economic downturn within the corporation, can afford to participate fully in the program as it now is structured. Lockheed Martin officials are unsure whether the program, as it currently is set up, will benefit them and have been in talks with the Air Force to try for a better deal. Boeing does not have any problems with any aspects of the contract.
