Successfully Launches AsiaSat 4

An Atlas 3B
successfully launched AsiaSat 4 from Cape Canaveral, pad 36B, at
00:47 UTC on April 12. AsiaSat 4
is owned by and will be operated by Asia Satellite
Telecommunications Company Limited, Hong Kong. AsiaSat 4 will be
located at 122°E to provide television distribution and
telecommunications service throughout Asia, the Middle East,
Australasia, and Russia. The satellite delivery mission cost
US$240 million but a break down of the costs between launch,
satellite and insurance was not provided.
The
Boeing built BSS 601 HP satellite carries 28 C-band and 20 Ku-band
transponders with a with 9.600 kW of power for a 15-year design
life. The satellite was
originally scheduled to launch in early 2002, but Boeing delayed
delivery of the spacecraft for several months for additional
testing.
The
next Atlas launch will be HellaSat 2 which is scheduled for May 12
using an Atlas 5 rocket. In mid-June an Atlas 2AS launch is
scheduled from Vandenberg Air Force Base to carry a classified
satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office.
