In the first
satellite purchase announcement of 2003, Telesat Canada has
contracted with Astrium to build a replacement satellite for Anik
F1, to be named Anik F1R. The satellite, scheduled for launch in
2005, will include substantial content provided by Canadian
suppliers. Financial details were not disclosed. A launch vehicle
has not yet been selected.
Anik
F1R will be based on Astrium’s Eurostar 3000 bus, and mass about
4 metric tones when launched. It will carry 24 C-band and 32
Ku-band transponders. It should have a design life of 15 years.
Anik
F1R will replace Boeing built Anik F1, a BSS 702 satellite model,
which is experiencing accelerated degradation of its solar array
panels. Anik F1 was launched November 21, 2000 and positioned at
107.3°W.
