Ariane 4 Successfully Launches NSS 6

An Ariane 44L successfully launched NSS 6 at 23:04 UTC on December 17. NSS 6 is a telecommunication spacecraft for New Skies Satellites which will be positioned at 95°E, above the Indian Ocean near Indonesia.

The 4567 kg (10,065 lbm) NSS 6 was built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems using the A2100 AX satellite bus. The satellite carries 50 Ku-band transponders and 12 Ka-band uplink beams. The Ka-band uplink beams can be connected to the Ku band transponders for provide media and internet services with the capability for two-way interactive networking among other services. The spacecraft has a design life of 14 years.

One launch remains for the Ariane 4 model, which should take place in early 2003.
