Wins Helios IIA Launch

Arianespace
signed a contract with CNES to launch Helios IIA. Helios IIA is
the first second-generation satellite in the defense/security
observation system operated by France in collaboration with other
European countries. The French defense procurement agency
Delegation pour l'Armement (DGA), part of the Ministry of Defense,
is in charge of the program, with CNES acting as system architect
and contracting authority for the space segment. The space segment
is responsible for both the spacecraft and ground control
facilities.
An
Ariane 5 will launch the Helios IIA satellite into a
sun-synchronous polar orbit during the second half of 2004. The
4200 kg (9257 lbm) Helios IIA is being built by Astrium as prime contractor.
Alcatel Space is responsible for the high-resolution imaging
instrument. CNES is in charge of the development and operation of
the satellite control center, located at the Toulouse Space
Center.
Companion Helios IIB is scheduled
for launch in 2008
