Ariane Wins Helios IIA Launch

Arianespace signed a contract with CNES to launch Helios IIA. Helios IIA is the first second-generation satellite in the defense/security observation system operated by France in collaboration with other European countries. The French defense procurement agency Delegation pour l'Armement (DGA), part of the Ministry of Defense, is in charge of the program, with CNES acting as system architect and contracting authority for the space segment. The space segment is responsible for both the spacecraft and ground control facilities.

An Ariane 5 will launch the Helios IIA satellite into a sun-synchronous polar orbit during the second half of 2004. The 4200 kg (9257 lbm) Helios IIA is being built by Astrium as prime contractor. Alcatel Space is responsible for the high-resolution imaging instrument. CNES is in charge of the development and operation of the satellite control center, located at the Toulouse Space Center.

Companion Helios IIB is scheduled for launch in 2008
