Sea Launch Places Galaxy 3C into Orbit

Galaxy 3C was successfully launched by Sea Launche's Zenit 3SL at 22:39 UTC on June 15. The spacecraft will be positioned at 95°W. The spacecraft is expected to become operational by Fall 2002. Galaxy 3C will replace Galaxy 3R, where it will complement the Galaxy 8i satellite, which will also soon be replaced.

The 4850 kg (10,690 lbm) Boeing built Galaxy 3C carries 24 C-band and 52 Ku-band transponders. The spacecraft uses the BSS 702 satellite bus. The satellite is planned to have 15.000 kW power at the end of its 15 year design life.

A design flaw detected in concentrator devices on the solar panels of the first six BSS 702 spacecraft that were launched has been corrected with this spacecraft. The concentrator design was expected to increase power production, but on-orbit their optical qualities have been found to be slowly degrading, gradually reducing the power being produced by the solar arrays. Boeing removed the concentrators from the 702 design, and has added a sixth panel to the solar arrays to correct the problem.
