Atlas 3 Contracted to Launch MBSat

An Atlas III will launch MBSat in the fourth quarter of 2003. International Launch Services (ILS) signed an agreement with Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) to launch MBSat, which will provide services to mobile users in Japan and South Korea.

SS/L is building the ~3800 kg (~8375 lbm) satellite for Mobile Broadcasting Corp. (MBCO). The MBSat is spacecraft based on Loral’s LS 1300 spacecraft bus. The S-Band mobile broadcasting system will use Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) and 2.6GHz SFN that was authorized by Telecommunication Technology Council of Japan in 1999. The satellite is planned to have 7.400 kW of power, and a design life of more than 12 years.

Mobile Broadcasting Corp. was established May 29, 1998, in Japan to provide cars and mobile terminals with digital satellite broadcasting. MBCO's partners include 55 companies. For more information, visit www.mbco.co.jp
